TRUE RICHES; TRUE RICHES; TRUE RICHES

Everybody wants to be rich, it’s part of our fallen nature. While the prosperity message is very popular and gladly received, the message about asking people to live sacrificially, is not welcome. It is not received with the same joy, passion and optimism. The message of “living a life of sacrifice”, is not popular.

Why do believers separate one from the other? Being rich in Christ has everything to do with sacrificial living. Why do we embrace the pursuit of money, while simply ignoring the fact that we should pursue Heavenly Riches ?

The Lord rejoices in our prosperity, but He also calls us to live sacrificial lives. Jesus Christ began His life in a very humble way. He was born in one of the lowest places, a Manger. He was born of a very humble woman, Mary. He could have chosen to be born in a palace; after all, He was and still is the KING OF KINGS. Why did He choose to be born in this place of humility?

We can learn something from this. He purposely chose to humble himself. His humiliation did not rule out His Majesty. Christ humbled himself on purpose. What about His co-heirs? Are they not part of the same Royal Family? Do they not belong to the same Royal Kingdom?

The common tendency of the day is to Idolize what should not be idolized, and serve what should not be served.

Jesus Christ, though a King, chose voluntarily to humble himself. The condition of life, which Jesus voluntarily chose ought to be regarded with the most respect and holy reverence. We can also voluntarily choose not to pursue earthly riches in order that we might pursue Christ, and His purpose, while we live on earth. I am not talking about living a careless and indifferent life. The Lord despises laziness (See proverbs). Also, if we do not provide for our families, our behaviour is described as worse than an unbeliever. We can not wear the cloak of laziness and use Christianity as an excuse not to be diligent. This is contrary to scripture. Please do not mistake what I am saying here. I am referring to the unhealthy desire to be rich at any cost. I am talking about not being content with what you have. I am talking about the obsession of “keeping up with the Joneses” syndrome. Those in Christ should be confident about themselves and secure about what God has called them to do.

“Now godliness with contentment is great gain” (1Timothy 6:6). Christ is the ultimate example. Jesus Christ became poor because of us, that through His poverty we may become rich. (2 Cor. 8:9). We should be fishers of men, winning souls, and not fishers of money, especially with regards to the Kingdom. You may argue; how will the gospel be preached if there is no money? “Come let us reason together!!!” (Isaiah 1:18). Never at any-time did Christ say that the prosperity message was a perquisite for the Salvation of Souls. God can raise up even stones to provide for the furtherance of the gospel (Psalm 37:25). The unhealthy desire for earthly riches is a huge distraction from the PRIMARY purpose of the gospel; Salvation through Christ alone. (1Peter 1:18-19).

Prosperity, riches, et al, are all SECONDARY issues and should not be placed in the position of our PRIMARY concern; Salvation through Christ alone. Christ is the only source of divine wealth. True riches can only be found in Him. The gospel truth is (only those in Christ have TRUE RICHES.)
