5THE NEW MAN

Paul encourages us as believers in Jesus Christ to turn away from the lifestyle of the past and embrace a new one. He says,

“Since you have taken off your old man with its practices and have put on the new man.”

In Colossians 2:11 -12, the Colossians had to renounce, put off, cast away “the old man” (Rom.6:6, Eph.4:22), that is the “old self,” their former world, “with its practices,” listed in Col.3:5, 8, 9a:

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshipping the things of this world.”

But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behaviour, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.”

We are to put on the new man, like putting on new clothes:

“And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.” – Galatians 3:27. We are “to put to death the sinful,” (Col 3:5) and “lay aside” (Col.3:8) all our former vices.

Every believer in Christ has a new nature, being grafted into Christ. The old man is that old nature, birthed straight from the mother’s womb, it is everything that represents the old life, who we are naturally, before we met Christ. Every human is first born in Adam, and those in Christ are born again.

There are two men that will stand before God on the day of reckoning. Those born in Christ and those born in Adam. It is only through our union with Christ that we become the new person. The “new – self” is a progressively developing. Paul speaks about, “being renewed in the knowledge of the image of its Creator” (Col. 3:10). It is a process through which the outer man dies daily, but the inner man is renewed daily (2 Cor.4:16). Wouldn’t you rather have a renewed life than live with the old-self? Every believer in Christ is renewed daily by the Holy Spirit. The believer has a goal and a purpose. The Christian life is progressive.

If you are stuck with the “old-self” and “old ways,” you need to cry out to God to renew your mind. Pray that you will, “put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.”
